Like many people on New Year’s Eve, we spout a litany of resolutions that we plan on adhering to for the new year, but they usually only make it for the first week. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t at least give it a good effort — especially when it comes to trying to change the way we date.

Here are some dating resolutions that you might want to start practicing for 2016.

  1. Refrain from “drunk dialing” the ex.

We’ve all been there a time or two before when the alcohol clouds our judgement and we think it is a fantastic idea to drunk dial our ex. Who knows why we do it… Unresolved feelings? Pent up anger? Sexual frustration… Whatever it is, it usually causes more damage than it is worth.

  1. Embrace spontaneity.

When you are planning a first date, it shouldn’t be a big elaborate event — it can be way too much, way too soon. Instead, do something spontaneous that will impress her. This could be something like going for a stroll through the park and picking up a cup of hot chocolate along the way. Or it could even be a trip to an art exhibit.

  1. Never go to the same date spot more than twice.

While you may love that particular restaurant or that lounge, but you don’t want to go there so much that the staff starts knowing your name and your order. Just imagine how awkward it would be when they ask you about an ex while out on a date with someone new.

  1. Be chivalrous.

Manners is always something a woman admires. So don’t hesitate to open doors, walk next to the road, offer to pay for dinner. These things may seem small and insignificant, but a woman will take notice and appreciate your efforts.

  1. Don’t fall into the nonchalant approach to dating.

If you’ve been dating someone for quite some time and it never seems to go any further than kissing and you’ve never seen the inside of their home, don’t be mistaken into thinking that they are just taking their time. The truth is they probably just aren’t that interested in you.

  1. Balance is important.

You don’t want to appear too interested in the person, but you also don’t want to act too disinterested either. You want to have a good balance between the two. This will let her know that you are interested in them, but you also have other things going on in your life and you aren’t waiting by the phone for them to call.

  1. Know when to give up.

No matter how hard you want to relationship to work out, sometimes it just will not happen. You’ve got to be wise enough to know when it is time to let it go.

  1. Give them your undivided attention.

Technology makes it difficult to fully detach yourself from others. When you’re on a date, you never want to check your phone in front of them, wait until they leave to go to the restroom. If there is an emergency, excuse yourself and take the call outside.
