5 Things You Should Know About Dating a Bisexual Guy

2 men and woman

So you’ve met a cute guy at a friend’s get together and you’re really hitting it off. You start hanging out more and you’re having the time of your life. Until he drops the bomb on you that he’s bisexual. Before you start to freak out, this does not mean that it has to be the last time you talk to him.

In fact, it shouldn’t deter you from dating him at all!

Be that as it may, there are a few things that you need to know about dating a bisexual guy.

1. Bisexuality is different for everyone.

People define their sexuality differently and bisexuality may be different for one person than it is for another. One thing you need to remember that it doesn’t mean that they identify as the opposite
gender, as gender and orientation are two different concepts.

When going into a relationship with a bisexual guy, throw out every idea you think you have about bisexuality out the window, as he may want to try to explain his sexuality to you and you don’t want your biases to get in the way of what he is trying to say.

2. Always be open minded and show respect.

Being hit with the news that your new partner is bisexual may be a hard pill to swallow, but it is important that you broach the subject with an open mind. It is a good idea to have a conversation about their sexuality as soon as you learn about it, rather than later. When you learn about their sexual orientation, you can discuss their previous encounters (but don’t ask for numbers or details). You will want to discuss boundaries, your exclusivity, and what their preferences mean for the future of your relationship. When you are open now, it helps to greatly reduce the jealousy or insecurity later down the road.

3. Open communication is more important now than it has ever been before.

One of the biggest rules about dating a bisexual guy is that there are always open lines of communication, both for you and your partner. If you choose to date a bisexual guy, you may have questions regarding their preferences. You may even be curious about how attracted to you they are and other things of that nature. Like any other relationship, communication is going to be the one thing that can either make your relationship stronger or could ruin it. When you start being open and honest from the very beginning, you will be less likely to get hurt or feel awkward about their sexuality as time progresses.

4. People will be asking you questions about your boyfriend’s sexuality, too.

When people find out that you are dating a bisexual guy, you shouldn’t be too surprised when they start firing questions at you too. People are intrigued by something new and things that they, themselves have never experienced. Of course, it doesn’t make it right for these people to ask such invasive questions regarding your relationship with your partner.

When people know that your boyfriend is bisexual, they may feel the need to “warn” you about any interactions he may have with an openly gay or bisexual guy because they may (wrongly) assume that he is hitting on the other guy. Simply tell your friends to kindly mind their own business and that he is free to talk to whomever he wishes.

5. You need to respect his status as a bisexual man.

Some bisexual men may be out while others still may not be so open about their sexuality. It is up to them to tell other people about their “out” status—not you, and you need to respect that. You shouldn’t
accidentally out someone, especially if you are uncertain if they told people themselves. You don’t want to talk about their status because it simply isn’t something for you to say.

Dating a bisexual guy isn’t that unlike dating a straight man. Both relationships require open communication, trust, and respect. When you are in doubt about any aspect of your relationship, you should talk to your partner and clear the air before you start suspecting the worst things in them. Not only that, but you may also learn some things about yourself that you never knew. It’s an experience that shouldn’t be discredited, to say the least.
