Does the thought of having a casual relationship send shivers down to your naughty bits? For some, it terrifies them, which is why those people tend to stick to romantic relationships.

However, if you’re a thrill seeker who doesn’t want to be tied down to any one person, a casual relationship might be right up your alley.

Here are 6 casual relationship rules that will keep you from getting too attached and in over your head.

1. Don’t let your emotions confuse you.

It’s easy to think that you’re falling for your casual partner. However, if you think you are really falling for them, avoid them for a couple weeks so you can see if you miss them or not. You also get to see if whatever is between you is more than just sex.

2. Don’t be controlled.

Causal relationships involve two people, but usually, one person has a bit (or a lot) of control over the other person. The dominating person usually has a say when you two hook up and what not. If you feel like the other person is too controlling but you are bending to their will, it’s probably because you have deeper feelings for them then you realized. If you feel this way, you need to sever ties immediately so you don’t get hurt in the long run.

3. Set a few ground rules.

There are no rules set in stone. But that shouldn’t mean there aren’t any rules at all. A few basic ground rules can go a long way in making this relationship work for both of you. Ask them a few questions once you establish that a casual relationship is what both of you are looking for.

4. Don’t say that you love them.

It’s so easy to feel an attraction to someone that you’re having sex with and spending a lot of time with. If you want to say ‘I love you’ to them because they make you feel so amazing, you may want to rethink it. By saying those three little words, it will take your relationship to a whole other stage. Or it might even end the relationship for good.

5. Be honest about how you feel.

If you don’t think the arrangement is working out, talk to your partner about it. If the sex is boring or the together times are awkward and empty, chances are, you’re losing interest in this person. If you wake up thinking about this person, chances are you’re falling for them. You want to talk to them and let them know how you’re feeling.

6. Talk about things if that line has been crossed.

There are going to be hundreds of invisible boundaries throughout your casual relationship. You shouldn’t ask about dates they have with other people, neither control one another and so forth.

However, there are some boundaries that you have to have in place.

This includes no talks about love or if they try to dictate who you can or cannot see. The point of a casual relationship is that the time you spend with that person is between you and them — that’s where it ends.
