Secrets of Happy Couples Revealed

couple lies on the seashore

If you want to know about the secret of a happy relationship, then your best bet would be to seek advice from people who have been in a relationship for a while. When we say “a while,” we don’t mean a few years or a decade — we mean ask people who have been married for decades.

We’ve reached out to folks who have been married for over 20 years to find out their secret to a happy relationship, and you might be surprised to find out what they had to say!

1. Opposites Do NOT Attract…

When we watch those rom-coms on television or on the big screen, we’re lead to believe that opposites attract and that we need to be with someone completely different than us in order to have a successful relationship. WRONG! Sure, you may have passion with someone who is different than you, but to have a truly happy and healthy relationship, you need to be with someone who has similar values, core beliefs, interests, and perspective on life.
Think about it, could you really see yourself marrying someone who is all doom and gloom while you’re lil’ Miss Sunshine? Not at all.

2. Listen to Others

The people who care most about you will tell you things that you need to hear, even if you don’t want to hear them. So if your friends and family are telling you that someone you’re dating isn’t a good person, chances are they are telling you these things for a reason. Listen to them and see if there is any validity to what they say.

3. Physical Attraction Is Important

We all know that everyone’s definition of beauty is different and what may be attractive to you isn’t necessarily going to be attractive to someone else. With that said, in order for any relationship to work, there has to be some kind of physical attraction there.

4. Always Communicate with Each Other

Communication is essential in any relationship. How can you possibly know what the other person is thinking or feeling if you don’t talk to one another? You can’t! You have to open yourself up to your partner to everything. Don’t be afraid to tell them what’s on your mind, be it good, bad, or other. The more you communicate with your partner, the closer you two will feel to one another and it’ll leave less room for doubt and insecurities.

5. Have a Sense of Humor

A couple that can laugh together can stay together. However, you do want to be certain that you both find the same things funny. If you prefer watching South Park and your partner enjoys low-key sitcoms where the jokes make you think — it could be an indication that maybe you don’t see eye to eye on certain things and that could be problematic in the future.
